Theology as science and theology as experience

pages: 153-174

Abstract

The Author argues that theology is a miraculous combination of liturgical spirituality and mystical contemplation with human science.

Theological thought and work can witness about God only if it is grounded on the living experience handed down in hesychast tradition, wherein a praying theologian may „touch“ the Self-Truth (God). This is feasible because the theologian is capable to receive the uncreated energies of God. This most sublime Experience may be reached in the Hesychast secrecy of the face to face Encounter, or during the Liturgy in the midst of people.

Contemporary Orthodox theology is evaluating all her problems through the aspect of ecclesiology. It will remain for ever only that what pertains to the Church.
