Staretz Paissy Velickovsky's contribution to the spiritual growth of Russia 18the and 19th centuries

pages: 139-152

Abstract

A short biography of the recently canonized Saint is given here.

The essential contribution of the Staretz Paissy of Moldavia is his untiring translation of the Holy Fathers of the Desert, like St. Isaac of Syria, St. Diadoch, St. John and Barsanuphios... And the Hesychasts of Mount Athos as Gregory of Sinai, St. Philotheos of Constantinople, St. Symeon the New Theologian. Thus the whole of the Philochalia has been granted to the Slavic world.

This gift of the great Staretz served as the counterbalance to the Rationalism of the Western Enlightenment.

Not only Dostoyevsky grew up on the pure waters of Philocalia, but a pleiad of the new saints of Russia — like the Abbots of Optino, St. Theophan the Recluse, and St. Ignatius Brianchaninov.
