The dogma of Chalcedon

pages: 31-58

Abstract

The author expounds the historic set-up of the dogmatic formula promulgated by the Church Fathers on the Fourth Ecumenical Council held at Chalcedon in 451.

He points to the strenuous equilibrium of Christological terminology accomplished through a synthesis of the best insights found in the Alexandrian (Cyrillian) School of Interpretation and in the Antiochene School, together with the “Tomos” of Pope Leo and the theologians of Constantinople.

The perennial value of the Chalcedonian formula has only been made more explicit by the following Councils of the Great Church.
