Dr. Nikolaos Yoannides

The Hesychast movement

pages: 181-189

Abstract

The author is tackling here with the turbulent history of theological strife between the hesychast monks of Mount Athos and Barlaam from Calabria.

The decision taken at the councils of 1341—51 in Constantinople became binding for the whole Orthodox Church. The main issue was the distinction (not separation) between the Essence of God and His UNCREATED ENERGIES. The latter being participable to men, and, hence, the basis of their deification without any fusion with the Essence of God.
