Possibilities of Understanding Papal Primacy Today

pages: 359-394

Abstract

In this work we examine contemporary ecclesiological currents of the Roman– catholic theology as well as the results of the work of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue Between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, concerning the understanding of the Primacy in the Church. From the point of view of Orthodox, Papal Primacy is necessary in the Church, but it is understood in a way that doesn’t exclude sydonality. On the contrary, for the Orthodox, primacy and synodality are not only compatible but also mutually necessary.
