The author of this article examines the sources of early Syrian monasticism and asceticism. Special attention is devoted to neglected „Religious History“ – written by Theodoret of Cyrus – as one of the main testimonies of Syrian Christian ascetics. Article represents a milestone in the study of Syrian Christianity in the West.
