Take Thy Bond... and Write Fifty (Luke XVI. 6): The Nature of the Bond

Abstract

St. Luke knew what his Hellenic hearers would understand by the terms he used in Luke XVI. 6–8. The (to us) archaic formulation was precisely apt: Luke’s hearers knew at once that the debtors had signed acknowledgements including additional sums which were, whether called ‘compensation’ or ‘interest’, unquestionably exigible in the Hellenistic courts, and equally unquestionably contrary to the spirit (but perhaps not the letter) of the biblical prohibition of ‘usury’.
