Vladimir Soloviev and Dante (problem of Christian empire)

translated by: Bogomir Tihi

pages: 143-153

Abstract

In his Theocratic thinking Soloviev has been influenced by Dante’s vision of equilibrium between the two Powers. According to him, the Imperium and the Sacedotium are to be rightly managed only through the Third intermediary Power the Prophetic One.

It is a great danger for the Church to act as a political Power of constraint. This happened in a „Papo-cesarism” of Innocent III and IV. Soloviev agrees with a sentence of Dante: „Ergo, Imperium se ipsum destruere non licet”.
